Amritpal Singh (21) representing Punjab Police carved his name into the record books when he obliterated T.C. Yohannan’s 30-year-old Indian Long Jump record with 8.08m at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Tuesday (16 March).
Most of the top guns in Indian athletics had opted to stay away from the 10th Federation Cup National Senior Athletic Championship, yet, three national marks and a number of outstanding performances were registered at this three day meet which concluded here this evening.
Amritpal, an assistant sub-inspector hails from Sangrur in Punjab started his series with a modest jump 7.54m and stunned the audience with a 8.05m mark on his third attempt and made a copy of it in his next attempt before hitting the sand at 8.08m on his fifth try sailing against a head wind of 0.84m/s.
Heptathlon record goes too
Afro-Asian Games gold medallist J.J. Shobha of Andhra Pradesh bettered the national mark in women’s Heptathlon with a world class 6211 points. She did well in Long Jump with a personal best leap of 6.50m, which was better than the individual event winner’s mark! The break-up figures for her other events--100m Hurdles (13.71), High Jump (1.69), Shot Put (12.52), 200m (23.53), Javelin (44.16) and 800m (2:16.40).
For a meet which was skipped by the World bronze medallist Anju George, Discus throwers Neelam J. Singh and Anil Kumar, Olympic, and World Championship 400m semi-finalist K.M. Beenamol among others, the record performances set by Amritpal, Shobha and Manjula (in the newly introduced women’s 3000m steeplechase) brought life and respect to the meet.
